Christ Is Greater Than Condemnation

I love the honesty of the Bible. The apostle John teaches us that even though we are Christians we may not always “feel” like one.

For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.  1 John 3:20

Notice this statement- whenever our heart condemns us. John does not qualify this statement but leaves it open-ended by saying “whenever”. It is also interesting that John says that it is our “heart” that condemns us.

There are far too many Christians that blame Satan for things that our own heart manufactures.

Have you considered this?

Perhaps the condemnation you are facing is not a “demon” or spiritual warfare but is the distance and difference in your heart in resting in the finished work of the Christ.

As John continues with this encouragement he tells his readers that the answer to overcoming their condemnation is by resting in the truth that “God is greater than our heart and he knows everything.”

So what does God know?

Look at the words of the Psalmist:

10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13 As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
14 For he knows our frame;
    he remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103:10-14

In other words… Relax

If you have placed faith in Christ you are held in his hands. You are not, nor were you ever, saved by your own works. There is never a time when you “pay God back” for saving you as if you were a drowning victim hoping to compensate your rescuer.

The apostle John reminds us that we must preach the “good news” to our hearts not just believe it with our minds. Today wherever you are lean into this truth and when your heart condemns you… Relax! God is greater than your heart!
